Cate Blanchett has lined up her next film role in the upcoming project Rumours.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress has joined the Guy Maddin-directed feature, with production expected to begin on October 9.

The film is understood to have signed an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA, allowing Blanchett to shoot without breaching the ongoing Hollywood actor's strike.

Maddin is best known for his independent films such as My Winnipeg (2007), The Saddest Music in the World (2003) and The Forbidden Room (2015).

As for Blanchett, she's enjoyed an extensive career across both screen and stage. She's perhaps best known for her work in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films as Galadriel, as well as her recent roles in Ocean's 8 and Thor: Ragnarok.

Blanchett has also won multiple awards for her work, including Oscars for her roles in The Aviator (2005) and Blue Jasmine (2014).

Most recently, she starred in Todd Field's movie TÁR, playing the role of fictional classical music composer Lydia Tár, who is facing accusations of misconduct.

The film has received massive acclaim, winning Blanchett an award for Best Actress at the Critics Choice Awards in January and an Academy Award nomination for 'Best Actress'.

Following the win, the actress called out the "patriarchal pyramid" of awards shows during her acceptance speech and dedicated her win to women across the industry.

"Why don't we just say there's a whole raft of female performances that are in concert and in dialogue with one another, and stop the televised horse race of it at all?" Blanchett said.

"Because can I tell you, every single woman — whether [it's] television, film, advertising, tampon commercials, whatever — you're all out there doing amazing work that is inspiring me continually."
