Everybody loves the Back to the Future movies. Back when we first watched them, 2015 – setting of the second movie – felt like it was ages away. Now we're two years on from the 'future'.... man, we feel old.

With Marty and Doc Brown zipping about time, the sequel's make-up team was faced with the challenge of ageing up the cast by three whole decades, to depict what characters from 1985 would look like in 2015.

But how did they do? Did they make accurate guesses? To find out, we've taken each BTTF actor who donned ageing make-up and compared the result to what they look like today.

1. Michael J Fox (Marty)

  • Michael's age in 1989: 28
  • Marty's age in 2015: 47
  • Michael's age now: 56

Michael appeared as his 47-year-old self when Marty travelled to 2015, where he was a failing businessman who could no longer play the guitar.

Now, aged nine years older than he's mean to look in BTTF II, he's kept his dark hair rather than the fair-haired look Marty sported. Plus, he's thankfully not sporting that dodgy double-tie style.

2. Lea Thompson (Lorraine)

  • Lea's age in 1985: 24
  • Lorraine's age in 1985: 47
  • Lea's age now: 56

Lea played three different versions of Lorraine as a 47-year-old. First, in the original 1985 timeline where everything sucks for the McFly clan, again in the new-and-improved 1985, and finally in the second movie, in the alternate timeline where everything was truly terrible.

Lea is now aged nine years older than the character was in both movies and has fair hair – compared to her brunette style in the films. Facially speaking though, she's pretty much spot on compared to the 'happy 1985' version of Lorraine.

3. Christopher Lloyd (Doc)

  • Christopher's age in 1985: 47
  • Doc's age in 1985: 71
  • Christopher's age now: 78

Christopher was actually playing a man over 20 years older than he was at the time in the 1985 scenes and subsequent 'present day' versions of Doc. Now aged seven years older than he was meant to be in the film, and Christopher looks almost identical to his character's older self.

4. Thomas F Wilson (Biff)

  • Thomas's age in 1985: 26
  • Biff's age in 1985: 48
  • Thomas's age now: 58

There were three versions of Biff as a 48-year-old. The first was in the original 1985 timeline when he was still a bully to George, then he was a bumbling handyman in the 'nice' 1985, and then a Donald Trump-like billionaire in the 'nasty' 1985 (created by the older Biff's time meddling in 2015).

Today, actor Thomas F Wilson is 10 years older than he was supposed in the films, and looks kind of like a mix between all three incarnations.

5. Crispin Glover (George)

  • Crispin's age in 1985: 21
  • George's age in 1985: 47
  • Crispin's age today: 53

Crispin played a 47-year-old version of George just twice – Marty's pa was dead in the 'nasty 1985'. He first appeared as a greasy weakling in the original 1985, and then as a slick, super-confident author in the 'fixed' timeline.

Nowadays, we'd say Crispin – who is six years older than George was – looks something like a middle ground between the two versions... but it's a look that works for him.

6. Elisabeth Shue (Jennifer)

  • Elisabeth's age in 1989: 26
  • Jennifer's age in 2015: 47
  • Elisabeth's age now: 53

Shue replaced Claudia Wells as a young Jennifer in the second movie, and appeared as a 47-year-old when Marty visited 2015. Now aged six years older than she was supposed to be in BTTF II, she looks much younger than her 2015 counterpart. What's your secret, Elisabeth?

7. James Tolkan (Mr Strickland)

  • James's age in 1985: 54
  • Strickland's age in 1985: 60
  • James's age now: 86

James had minimal make-up added for his 1985 version of Strickland, as he was only six years younger than the 'older' character at the time, and the actor was made to look 30 years younger for his 1955 counterpart.

Now aged 86, he look... pretty damn incredible. Does he ever actually age? We'll have whatever these lot are having.

8. Donald Fullilove (Goldie)

  • Donald's age in 1985: 27
  • Goldie's age in 1985: 52
  • Donald's age now: 59

Donald only appeared briefly on a poster as Mayor Goldie Wilson's 52-year-old self in 1985, aged over 20 years older than he was at the time.

He is now seven years older than that again in real life, and looks exactly like he did in the poster, just with better hair. Is he a time traveller?

9. Flea (Needles)

  • Flea's age in 1989: 27
  • Needles's age in 2015: 47
  • Flea's age now: 54

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Flea appeared as Marty's rival Needles in the first two BTTF II movies, including as a bullying 47-year-old version in 2015.

He's now seven years older than that in real life and we reckon that's a pretty good effort from the make-up team. Flea just looks a little less rubbery today.
