If we're being honest, we've almost lost count of the number of incarnations and reboots of Lara Croft – but now it's time for a new one.

Not content with the upcoming live-action remake of Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander, game developer Square Enix has announced a brand new addition to the hugely popular series.

Although we don't have many details at the moment, we're still very excited by the prospect of experiencing Lara Croft's "defining adventure".

In a statement to Twitter, Square Enix promised that "big news" would be coming next year, and that they can't wait to share it with fans.

"Honestly, we wish we could share it with you right now, but we're taking a new approach this time," the statement read. "A new Tomb Raider game is coming.

"Driven by our goal of putting our fans first, we want you to know that it won't be very long between the official reveal and when you can play."

Teasing "a major event in 2018", we have a sneaking suspicion that the latest Tomb Raider title will coincide with the release of Lara's big-screen origin story.

And by the sounds of it, our next cinematic look at Lara is going to be very different to what we've seen before, so you can leave everything you learned from the Jolie era at the door.

Tomb Raider will hit UK and US cinemas on Friday, March 16, 2018.
