If there's one character fans hoped would make a return for Grey's Anatomy's finale last season, it was Dr Callie Torres.

ABC's medical drama said farewell to Jessica Capshaw's character Dr Arizona Robbins (alongside Sarah Drew's Dr April Kepner) in an emotional episode as she prepared to move to New York.

While Arizona's ex-wife Callie – played by Sara Ramirez between 2006 and 2016 – wasn't there in person, she was referenced in the episode as the character sent Arizona a message which read: "I can't wait to see you."

Grey's Anatomy fans have wondered why Ramirez couldn't return, and creator Shonda Rhimes responded through an Instagram Story.

"Let me tell you something – we tried," she said (via TVLine). "CBS has a hold of her. Because she's on [Madam Secretary]. And we can't get her.

"But we love her. Always. This is her home. Come home, Callie."

Details for the upcoming 15th season are slowly emerging, as lead character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will have a "new trajectory" and a personal arc involving her family background.

It also looks like she might find love once more, with showrunner Krista Vernoff teasing: "The question this season is not, 'Will Meredith Grey find love again?', but 'With whom will she find love?'"

Grey's Anatomy returns on ABC in the US on Thursday, September 27 at 8pm ET and airs on Sky Living in the UK. Station 19 returns on ABC on Thursday, October 4 at 9pm ET.
