Elio Schiavon Ceramic Wall Plate, Elio Schiavon Pottery, Schiavon Character Plate, Midcentury Italian Ceramic Wall Art,Italian Pottery Plate
This listing is for a vintage mid 20th century Italian ceramic wall plaque or plate with colorful hand painted characters. This lovely piece of modernist Italian pottery most likely made in the 1960's or early 1970's by Schiavon Ceramiche, in Padua, Italy and was most likely designed and thrown by Elio Schiavon himself. The terracotta plate was glazed with a black base glaze and then hand painted with colors including tan, orange, white, red and purple glazes. The back of the plate is glazed in white. It is hand signed "Schiavon" and "Italia" on the back and has holes for hanging. The footed plate measures 6-3/8 inches by 6-1/2 inches and is 1-1/4 deep. The plate is in very good used vintage condition consistent with age and use with no cracks, crazing, or repairs. There is one very small chip on the rim that has been touched up with black enamel and is not readily noticeable (see last photo). This is a great piece of Italian midcentury modern pottery that will make a great addition to your collection.
Elio Schiavon was born in Arzergrande in the province of Padua in 1925. He completed his studies at the School of Ceramic Art in Nove as a pupil of Andrea Parini. He worked later worked as an apprentice in the ceramic workshop of Luigi Zortea and completed his schooling at the Academy of Venice where he was a student of the architect Giorgio Wenter Marini. Schiavon started his own furnace, “Schiavon Ceramiche”, in Padua in 1954. The factory stood out for the high quality of it's products and soon received important public and private commissions. At the end of the 1980's, Elio handed the factory over to his son Luca, but continued his creative activities until the last few years of his life. Elio Schiavon died in Tonadico, in the province of Pordenone, in 2004. The workshop is still active today thanks to Luca.
