Pokémon GO: All The Naming Tricks For Choosing Your Eevee Evolution

There is perhaps no Pokémon that inspires loyalty quite like Eevee, save perhaps Bulbasaur. The little genetically anomalous fox thing has been with us since the very first games, blessing the player base with a wispy tail and a soft-looking tan ruff around its neck. But that just means its cute--hardly a distinction in the world of Pokémon. What makes Eevee special is its evolutions, plural: when Red and Blue first launched it was the only creature with a branching evolution, with the ability to turn into Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon depending on which elemental stone you used with it. That idea carried forward for several generations after, eventually bringing Umbreon, Espeon, Leafeaon, Glaceon and Sylveon into the mix, of which all but Sylveon are currently available in Pokémon GO. But while the evolutions are more or less random, there are ways to make sure you get what you want.

If you've been playing for a long time, you might already be familiar with this trick, but if you've just come back to the game or started for the first time you might still be trying the dice roll to round out your collection. Stop that! If you give your Eevee a special nickname you can choose its evolution, which is very handy when you're trying to finish the set.

Note that these tricks only work once: so if you've already gotten a Vaporeon by naming your Eevee Rainer, it's not going to work a second time. But if you want to fill your Pokédex, all you need is one.

Vaporeon: Rainer

Jolteon: Sparky

Flareon: Pyro

Umbreon: Tamao

Espeon: Sakura

Glaceon: Rea

Leafeon: Linnea

Those are all the naming tricks, but there are other methods too. If you walk 10km with Eevee as your buddy and evolve it during the day, you get an Espeon. Do the same but evolve it at night and you get an Umbreon. Glaceon and Leafeon also have special lures that you can use to guarantee evolution if you're standing by them.

The fun thing about this is that all Eeveelutions, as they're known, are meta-relevant in Pokémon GO. So not only are they some of the cutest creat
