Mexico's Layun joins La Liga side Granada from Club America

Mexico international Miguel Layun is leaving Club America for Granada, the Mexican champion announced Tuesday.

Layun was widely tipped for a move after the World Cup but stuck on with Las Aguilas for another tournament, making 17 appearances as the team captured the Apertura title.

"Spread your wings and fly very high," read a message to Layun on the team's official Twitter account. (In English, Las Aguilas translates to "the Eagles.")

Reports from Spain have indicated Granada will immediately loan Layun to second-division English side Watford, but no formal announcement has been made. "Thank you to the board of directors and Club America for all the support you've offered me," Layun wrote on Twitter. "This will be a new challenge and a dream to strive for."

The 26-year-old defender is adept with each foot and can push forward when needed, as he showed by scoring all four of Club America's goals in a 4-1 win against Santos in September. He played all 90 minutes of each of Mexico's four World Cup matches as Miguel Herrera's left wing back. 

Layun started his career with Veracruz in his home state before moving to Serie A, where he played two matches with Atalanta. He returned to Mexico ahead of the 2010 Clausura, joining America.
