Believe it or not, there has never been an Yves Saint Laurent exhibition in the UK.

All that will change this year, as the Bowes Museum in County Durham gets set to show the country's first ever YSL display on 11 July through until 25 October.

Yves Saint Laurent: Style is Eternal will include 50 key pieces from the legendary designer's 50-year career, featuring his female tuxedo and his works inspired by Picasso and Mondrian.

Many won't be familiar with the chosen venue of the Bowes Museum (most fashion exhibitions are famously held in London), but Saint Laurent's former partner, both in business and in love, Pierre Berge said that the French-style chateau in Barnard Castle, was "the perfect setting".

"It is extremely exciting to work on this first exhibition in the UK," he said.

"The Bowes Museum is a natural destination given its exceptional work with fashion and textiles; the museum and its location also clearly reflects Yves Saint Laurent's and my own passion for inspiring, timeless places."

Saint Laurent was known for redefining the way women dressed. Bergé once said, "If Chanel gave women their freedom, it was Saint Laurent who empowered them."
