Peter Odemwingie was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan to a Nigerian father and a Russian mother&nbsp;who were medical students.&nbsp;His middle name ‘Osaze’ means 'God chooses for you'.The striker&nbsp;moved with his family to Nigeria when he was two years old before completing his secondary education in Russia.There, he began his journey in the beautiful game - representing KAMAZ and CSKA Moscow at youth level.&nbsp;

Birth and early beginning

Odemwingie returned to Nigeria at the age of 17. He continued his development at Lagos football academy AS Racines.He was spotted by top-flight side Bendel Insurance – where he was handed his first professional contract.Between 2000 to 2002, he represented the Benin City-based outfit while scoring 19 goals in 53 league appearances.His impressive performances in the NPFL earned him a move to Belgian side La Louviere in 2002, although he had an unsuccessful trial with Anderlecht.

Return to Nigeria and first pro contract

In his first season at La Louviere, Odemwingie helped the Wolves win the Belgian Cup – a triumph that earned them qualification into the Uefa Cup (now Europa League).Despite scoring nine times for the Belgians in 44 appearances, Lille signed him in 2004 for an undisclosed fee.He scored a handful of goals in France but his most notable was his effort against AC Milan at the San Siro to take the Mastiffs to the Champions League knockout stages.In 2007, on July 16 to be precise, Odemwingie signed for Lokomotiv Moscow for a reported fee of $14 million on a four-year contract.

Spells in Belgium, France and Russia

After three seasons at Lokomotiv Moscow, Odemwingie was prized away by Premier League side West Bromwich Albion on August 20, 2010.He made an instant impact at the Hawthorns scoring on his English top-flight debut as the Baggies secured a 1-0 victory over Sunderland.The Nigerian put up commanding performances and finished the 2010-11 campaign with 15 goals from 32 league outings to become the club’s top goalscorer ever in a single season.On 30 April, Odemwingie became the first player in West Brom's Premier League history to score in four consecutive games.At West Brom, he won three Player of the Month awards – the most by any Nigerian in the history of the English top-flight.His 30 league goals for the Baggies make&nbsp;him the club’s highest goalscorer in the Premier League – a feat that is yet to be matched.&nbsp;

Then of West Bromwich Albion, Odemwingie thought he had secured a Deadline Day switch to Queens Park Rangers in January 2013.Believing he would complete the formalities of the deal, the striker drove to Loftus Road.However, Odemwingie was left outside Loftus Road in his car and refused entry into the stadium after both clubs maintained a fee had not been agreed.

After leaving West Brom, Odemwingie joined Cardiff City for £2.25 million on a two-year contract.However, he represented them for a season before heading to Stoke City where he was loaned to Bristol City following his inability to break into the club’s first team.Before drawing the curtain on his football career, he enjoyed spells at Rotherham United and Madura United in Indonesia.&nbsp;

Odemwingie's post West Brom spell

After representing Nigeria at the U23 level, Odemwingie made his senior debut in a 3-0 friendly win over Kenya on May 4, 2002.His first goal came two years later in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola.Before drawing the curtain on his international career, he accrued 10 goals in 63 international outings. Two of those goals came against South Africa in an Afcon 2004 encounter.The striker was selected as an over-age player for Nigeria U23’s Olympic squad, scoring in the quarter-final against Ivory Coast as the team earned a silver medal after losing to Argentina.Odemwingie was involved in a dispute with coach Stephen Keshi after being omitted from the squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. That saw him also left out of the 2014 World Cup squad.

Super Eagles career

The former West Bromwich Albion forward is now a professional golfer.Having&nbsp;retired from football in April 2019, he took to social media to announce his membership into the Professional Golfers Association (PGA).Formerly an amateur, his status was upgraded to a PGA assistant professional.&nbsp;Recently, Odemwingie stated that he completed level two of his professional golf exams and is heading into the final year of his studies.
