The Nike Dunk Low ‘Black Gold’ does a full 180 on a classic

To the uninformed, the Nike Dunk Low ‘Black Gold’ is just another new colourway. But actually, it's a redux of one of the greatest sneakers ever. Back in 1985, just months after he introduced the Air Jordan 1 to the world, legendary footwear designer Peter Moore revealed the Nike Dunk. One of the first colourways that he worked on was the mythical ‘Goldenrod,’ which, even after 38 years, continues to inspire pairs – and hype – like this one.

The ‘Black Gold’ is essentially a completely flipped version of the OG ‘Goldenrod,’ which debuted as part of the ‘Be True To Your School’ collection. Dubbed the ‘Reverse Goldenrod’ (for obvious reasons), this trainer features the same all-leather construction, but instead of working on top of a ‘Black’ base and being overlaid by panels of ‘University Gold,’ it changes things around. It's a simple switch-up, but one that really works.

Underfoot, the midsole is dipped in white and infused with plush rubber for extra comfort and cushioning both on and off the hardwood, and a Nike Swoosh glides across the lateral and medial sidewalls. And, just in case that wasn't enough, the Swoosh has its own little Swoosh, which appears on top of a chequered flag-like tag.

Even though the Dunk has been around for the better part of four decades, sneaker fans still can't get enough of it. And with the model's big 40th bday coming up just around the corner, rumour has it that Nike will be bringing back some of its bestselling colourways including the ‘Brazil’ and the ‘Plum.’ So it's safe to say that this hype isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.
