The cactus offered in this listing is an excellent and healthy example of the "monstrose" form of the Peruvian Apple Cactus (Cereus peruvianus "monstrosus"). It is well rooted and is a fascinating living sculpture that will continue to fold, twist and branch as it grows larger.
All sides of the exact plant being offered are shown in the listing photos. It measures 8 x 6 inches and stands 11-1/2 inches above the soil. It was photographed growing in an 8 inch pot, however the container and soil will not be shipped with the cactus.
These curious looking cacti are incredibly easy to grow and care for. When mature, they may be planted outdoors in zone 9 and 10 if protected from the coldest temperatures of the year. In other areas of the country, and while under 2 feet tall, exposure to temperatures below 40 degrees should be avoided.
A good deal of sunlight, 6 or more hours, is necessary to keep these cacti happy. The plant may be scorched by late afternoon summer sunlight in the warmest parts of the country. A very well draining soil is needed as a growing medium. We suggest obtaining a commercially available cactus soil then amending it with 25% coarse sand, perlite or another inorganic material. When grown in a container, they should be watered deeply once every 10 to 14 days from late spring through early fall and once every 4 to 6 weeks for the balance of the year. These can easily grow to reach a height of 15 feet and may be 12 feet in diameter at the end of their very long lifespan. They may produce large white flowers that are followed by red edible fruit.
