Madrid, Aug 21 (Ians) Fc Barcelona were pushed to their limits in a 2-0 victory over Cadiz during their inaugural league match at the Montjuic Stadium in Barcelona on Sunday night.
The fixture hinted at the challenges awaiting Barca this season, with their Camp Nou Stadium under reconstruction. The vast open areas in the stands and a muted ambiance were palpable, especially against a resilient Cadiz that not only defended stoutly but also created scoring opportunities, reports Xinhua.
Conan Ledesma’s series of outstanding saves kept Cadiz competitive. However, he was rendered powerless when Pedri netted a goal in the 82nd minute. Ferran Torres added another during injury time, a goal that somewhat belied Barca’s initial struggles.
Meanwhile, Betis and Atletico Madrid played out a goalless draw at the Benito Villamarin Stadium. Despite having the better chances, Betis’ erratic finishing prevented them from registering a shot on target. Nonetheless, Isco...

Madrid, Aug 7 (Ians) The Spanish La Liga kicks off a new season under its fresh official name this weekend. Yet, the ‘new’ Liga EA Sports is expected to witness the same teams vying for the title, with Fc Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid emerging as the principal contenders.
It, however, marks the dawn of a different era for the reigning champions, Fc Barcelona. With seasoned players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets exiting the club during the summer, the addition of Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu, and Inigo Martinez should ably fill the void.
Ousmane Dembele’s surprising move to Paris Saint Germain raised eyebrows, and unless Barca secure another signing or Ansu Fati returns to form, their attacking strength, where Robert Lewandowski is about to turn 35, might falter.

Madrid, June 21 (Ians) Real Madrid announced on Wednesday that German midfielder Toni Kroos has signed a one-year contract extension, which will keep him at the club through June 2024.
“Real Madrid C.F. and Toni Kroos have agreed to extend the player’s contract, which will see him remain with the club through 30 June 2024,” the club’s official website confirmed.
Kroos transferred to Real Madrid in 2014 from Bayern Munich. Since then, he has made 417 appearances, becoming the German with the highest number of games played for the club and has won four Champions League and three La Liga titles, a Xinhua report said.
Although there were slight doubts regarding Kroos’ willingness to extend his contract due to interest from Saudi Arabia, the 33-year-old has chosen to stay with the club.
However, he is likely to have a reduced role in the next season following the €103 million signing of Jude Bellingham.

Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday confirmed the sale of the 19-year-old, who already has 24 appearances for England, with Bellingham set to sign a six-year contract with Real Madrid.
Bellingham becomes Real Madrid’s first signing of what is expected to be a busy summer, following the departures of players such as Marco Asensio, Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard and Mariano Diaz, with others such as Dani Ceballos, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos still to sign new contracts, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid (Spain), May 18 (Ians) Although La Liga doesn’t end until the weekend of June 3, Real Madrid’s season is to all intents and purposes over following their 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League semifinal.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side are 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga, with Barca crowned champions last weekend with four games left to play. Although Real Madrid are locked in a race with Atletico Madrid to finish second, their place in next season’s Spanish Super Cup is already assured after beating Osasuna in last month’s Copa del Rey final.
At the start of the year, the pro-Madrid press were talking about the club winning six titles this season, but in the end, they lifted just the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the World Club Cup, in which they defeated Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s Al Ahly,...

Madrdi, May 10 (Ians) Real Madrid and Manchester City drew the first leg of their Champions League semifinal 1-1 in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium after a thrilling 90-minute game.
Vinicius Jr put Real Madrid ahead in the first half, but Kevin de Bruyne leveled for the Premier League leaders midway through the second half, reports Xinhua.
Manchester City made six changes from the side that beat Leeds United at the weekend, while Real Madrid’s only changes from the team that won the final of the Copa del Rey were to bring in Luka Modric for Aurelian Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger for the suspended Eder Militao.
Man City kicked off by dominating the ball, pressing high and winning possession high up the field, and Thibaut Courtois was called into action to save from De Bruyne in the eighth minute.

Madrid, May 7 (Ians) Two goals from Real Madrid striker Rodrygo gave his side a 2-1 win in the final of the Spanish Copa del Rey against a courageous Osasuna on Saturday night.
The result means Real have won the Cup 20 times in history, while Osasuna’s second final appearance ended with the same result as the previous one, which they lost 2-1 to Betis in 2005.
Rodrigo opened the scoring for Real Madrid in the opening minute. Vinicius Jr was given too much space to turn past Jon Moncayola and Ruben Pena before pulling the ball back for his teammate to score with a shot that deflected over keeper Sergio Herrera.
Osasuna reacted well with Aridane and Ante Budimir heading at Thibaut Courtois before Aimar Oroz fired just wide, a Xinhua report said.

Madrid, April 11 (Ians) Real Madrid aims to return to business as usual when they take on Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday night.
Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti rested key players for Saturday’s match at home to Villarreal and saw how his side lost a thrilling match 3-2, but key players, such as Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Dani Carvajal are all likely to be back against Chelsea, reports Xinhua.
Ferland Mendy is Madrid’s only injury and the only big doubt is whether Nacho Fernandez, David Alaba or Eduardo Camavinga will replace him.
Although he has performed well in midfield in recent weeks, Camavinga could be the favorite, after his excellent display on the left in Madrid’s 4-0 Copa del Rey win away to Barcelona last week.

Madrid, March 16 (Ians) Real Madrid booked their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win at home to Liverpool, giving them a 6-2 triumph on aggregate.

Madrid, Feb 22 (Ians) Real Madrid’s impressive win away to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night has come with a price ahead of their La Liga derby at home to Atletico Madrid this weekend.

Madrid (Spain), Feb 20 (Ians) Midfielders Toni Kroos and Aurelien Tchouameni have both been left out of the Real Madrid squad that left for Liverpool on Monday ahead of their UEFA Champions League last-16 first-leg tie.
The duo missed Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Osasuna with flu and neither has recovered in time for the game. That limits the options of coach Carlo Ancelotti in midfield, and the Italian will almost certainly line up with Luka Modric, Dani Ceballos and Eduardo Camavinga.
The good news for Madrid is that Karim Benzema has shaken off the slight muscle issue that sidelined him at the weekend and has been included in the squad, reports Xinhua.

Madrid, Jan 26 (Ians) Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid go head-to-head in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Friday (1:30am Ist) for a place in the semifinal of the Copa del Rey knockout tournament.
The Madrid derby sees Real Madrid return to their home ground for the first time since November 10 — a total of 77 days — and the return has already created some controversy, with the club sending just 334 tickets to Atletico for the match, reports Xinhua news agency.
Real Madrid go into the game after winning 2-0 away to Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday, in a game where their effectiveness in attack was the difference against a rival that controlled much of the ball.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti is likely to bring Luka Modric and Toni Kroos back into his starting 11 for the game, although injuries to David Alaba and Dani Carvajal mean Nacho Fernandez and Ferland Mendy will continue as full backs.

Madrid (Spain), Jan 23 (Ians) The 18th round of games in Spain saw both Fc Barcelona and Real Madrid win their respective games, while Real Sociedad continue to press on their heels in third place.
Here are some things we learned in La Liga this weekend.
1. Barca don’t have to show their best
Pedri’s first-half goal was enough to give Fc Barcelona a win at home to Getafe and keep Xavi Hernandez’s side three points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.
It was far from a vintage display from Barca against a rival that posed more problems than many might have expected, but with Ousmane Dembele looking lively in attack and Barca’s defense keeping up an impressive record that has seen them concede just six goals in La Liga all season, they did just about enough to win.

Madrid, Jan 23 (Ians) Fc Barcelona retained a three-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after both sides won.
Pedri’s 35th-minute goal gave Barca a 1-0 win at home to Getafe, who complicated things for the league leaders for most of the game, reports Xinhua news agency.
Barca lacked spark in attack without Robert Lewandowski, but goalkeeper Marc Andre Ter Stegen produced another solid display in goal to snuff out any threat from Getafe.
Barca’s win meant Real Madrid kicked off their game away to Athletic Club Bilbao six points off the back of the table, but an excellent goal from Karim Benzema in the 24th minute (his 19th against the Basques) put them ahead in an even first half.
Athletic had Madrid on the back foot for nearly all of the second half but struggled to provide a finish to some good approach play.

Madrid (Spain), Nov 12 (Ians) Fc Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is going to have to use his imagination to carry out training sessions during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
A club record 16 Barcelona players have been called up by their respective countries for the World Cup, three more than the 13 who went to Russia in 2018.
That leaves Xavi with just seven first-team regulars in Barcelona, bearing in mind that Gerard Pique has also announced his retirement from the game.
Those players have been given holidays until December 5, but of the seven Sergi Roberto and Franck Kessie are injured, meaning that in theory, Xavi will have to work with reserve goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, defenders Hector Bellerin, Marcos Alonso and Alejandro Balde, while youngster Pablo Torre plays games with Barca’s B-team.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 15 (Ians) Real Madrid scored two late goals to beat Rb Leipzig 2-0 to maintain their 100 percent start to their UEFA Champions League defense.

Real Madrid travel to Celtic Park in Glasgow with a 100 percent winning record this season and the reigning European champions will expect to continue their winning start, despite their rivals’ excellent start to the season in Scotland.
Celtic welcome Real Madrid after thumping traditional rivals Rangers 4-0 in the Old Firm clash at the weekend, and over 60,000 fans will provide a tremendous atmosphere.
However, Real Madrid are a technically better side, with Vinicius Jr. in excellent form, while new arrival Aurelien Tchouameni has slotted perfectly into central midfield.

Madrid, Aug 29 (Ians) Captain Karim Benzema scored twice in a wild finish as Real Madrid won 3-1 at Espanyol to preserve their 100 per cent record after three games of the La Liga season.
Vinicius Junior’s tidy finish was cancelled out by a goal from Joselu, who has made a habit of scoring against Madrid since spending three years early in his career with the capital club’s ‘Castilla’ B team, reports Dpa.
Benzema had a goal ruled out after the break, while Joselu almost pinched another, before Benzema turned in a cross from Rodrygo to snatch the points. Espanyol goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte was sent off in stoppage time and Benzema added his second from the subsequent free-kick as the game ended chaotically.
The result means Madrid move level on nine points with Real Betis, the next opponents for Carlo Ancelotti’s team and the only other side with a perfect record.

Madrid, May 18 (Ians) Real Madrid will be without German midfielder Toni Kroos for the decisive last game of the season after the club confirmed on Monday that he has tested positive for Covid-19.
Kroos had been isolated at home since Friday after a close contact had tested positive for the virus and missed Sunday's 1-0 win away to Athletic Club Bilbao and he will now also have to sit out Saturday's home match against Villarreal, Xinhua reports.
Real Madrid need to beat Villarreal and hope that Atletico Madrid fail to win in their visit to relegation-threatened Valladolid in a game that will be played at the same time, to be crowned this season's La Liga champions.
The German is the ninth member of the Real Madrid first-team squad to test positive for Covid-19 this season, following Eder Militao, Casemiro, Nacho Fernandez, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Fede Valverde, and Luka Jovic,...

Berlin, March 29 (Ians) Satisfying results against two underdogs don't conceal Germany's most pressing problem. At this summer's European Championship, coach Joachim Loew's team will have to do the job without an out-and-out spearhead.
The 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Iceland (3-0) and Romania (1-0) showed distinct profligacy in converting chances, something that is causing concern.
Leroy Sane (City), Serge Gnabry (Bayern), and Timo Werner, and Kai Havertz (Chelsea) might be skillful wingers, but the four are far from being goal-scoring machines.
An inadequacy in converting chances at their clubs and in the national team is becoming one of the primary concerns for Loew when facing leading football nations such as France and Portugal and then Hungary in the group stage at the continental tournament, Xinhua news reported.
"If we had a Lewandowski around, we would win every game," former Bayern president and TV pundit Uli Hoeness said, adding: "But we don't.

Madrid, March 15 (Ians) The race for the La Liga title got tighter over the weekend as league leaders Atletico Madrid dropped two points when they settled for a 0-0 draw away to Getafe.
Getafe goalkeeper David Soria made a series of excellent saves to deny Atletico, especially after defender Allan Nyom was sent off for a bad foul with 20 minutes left to play, Xinhua reported.
Atletico pushed hard for a win and Luis Suarez hit the post with seven minutes to play, but lacked the clarity to take all three points.
Karim Benzema's two late goals gave Real Madrid three points against Elche, who had taken a 61st minute lead thanks to Dani Calvo's header.
The entry of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos after the goal changed the game and they combined for Benzema to equalize with a 73rd minute header, before sealing the win in the first...

Madrid, March 2 (Ians) Real Madrid dropped two vital points in the race for the La Liga title when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Real Sociedad.
The result leaves Real Madrid five points less than league leaders, Atletico Madrid, with an extra game played ahead of the Madrid derby which will be played in Atletico's Wanda Metropolitano Stadium next weekend, Xinhua news agency reported.
Real Madrid again lacked effectiveness in front of goal without the injured Karim Benzema, but Real Sociedad deserves credit for a solid display in which they always looked threatening on the break on Monday night.
The game was just six minutes old when the visitors should have had a penalty when Casemiro brought down Nacho Monreal only for the referee to rule it out for a prior offside, which for some reason the Var did not correct.

Swedish soccer player Jimmy Durmaz has delivered a stirring message against racism in a widely shared video filmed alongside his World Cup teammates.
The video — recorded Sunday — came a day after Sweden's 2-1 loss to Germany, for which the 29-year-old midfielder was blamed for giving away the 95th-minute free kick from which Toni Kroos scored the winning goal. Durmaz, who was born in Sweden to Assyrian parents, says he came under attack on social media, claiming in the message that he had been called a "darkie, bloody Arab, terrorist, Taliban," and that his family ...

Saturday’s dramatic World Cup competition between Germany and Sweden set a new record as the most-watched group stage match not involving the U.S. team, with an average of 5.4 million viewers and a peak of 6.7 million viewers.
Kicking off at 2 p.m. Et, the match saw Germany, the defending world champions, on the verge of elimination at halftime when Sweden scored a first-half goal. But the Germans tied the game a few minutes into the second half and, in the final minute of the match, midfielder Toni Kroos curved the ball into the net on a short, free kick to give Germany the victory and the hopes alive of repeating as champions.

(Updated With Viewership) Having captured everyone’s attention with their June 17 World Cup battle, Mexico and Germany took to the pitch yesterday to remind everyone why this tournament of the beautiful game is one of the finest in all of sports – and make Rupert Murdoch and Fox very happy.
Early on Saturday, our southern neighbor came off their jaw-dropping upset win over Germany with a solid 2-1 victory over South Korea with goals from Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez. The Lafc and West Ham players’ efforts helped Mexico nail its position at the top of Group F as it heads to now face Sweden on June 27.
If Mexico was representing with pride for North America in the Russia hosted 2018 World Cup, reigning champions Die Mannschaft showed the almost celebrating Swedes exactly why they have the nickname and victories they do. As the Saturday afternoon match stood at 1-1 going into...

Football Manager 2016 is due for release on November 15 and with 2015/16 season well underway (in real life) it’s time to think about who FM16 will select as their best players on the new game.
The beautifully-accurate football simulation doesn’t tend to get many things wrong therefore the players who make this list should be proud of their achievements and start to believe (if they don’t already) that they’re the finest footballers on the planet.
Last year’s top 15 list featured, Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal, Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie yet due to the influx of talent currently on offer in world football, I have predicted that they will just miss out on this year’s list. Other big players such as Thomas Muller, Thiago Silva and Alexis Sanchez once again missed the cut although will still be key players on this year’s release.

There aren’t many players like Arturo Vidal.
Essentially, he covers the space from one 18-yard box to the other and whether it’s passing, tackling or shooting he can do everything. Vidal does it all. He can be detonated at any point during the 90 minutes and the effect is outrageous. Like a midfield powered-up Pac-Man he glides through midfield spaces, challenges for every loose ball and starts frequent fast-paced counter attacks. If you thought Bayern Munich had bought themselves a £26 million Bastian Schweinsteiger like-for-like replacement then you thought wrong…
Schweinsteiger was a man of leisure; he masterfully conducted Bayern’s midfield from the half way line, something he has done effortlessly throughout his career. Vidal doesn’t possess the same carefully aged skill-set but rather acts as a midfield hype man bouncing around the centre circle like a wound up racing duck toy.

Just a few years ago, Bolton Wanderers were earning a point at European heavyweight Bayern Munich in a UEFA Cup tie at the Allianz Arena. The Germans, while not the Guardiola-lite powerhouse of today, still boasted the likes of Oliver Kahn, Franck Ribery, Toni Kroos and Bastian Schweinsteiger, so when Kevin Davies netted a late equaliser to salvage a 2-2 draw, the Trotters were in dreamland.
Of course, Bolton were used to such scalps over the big boys. Sam Allardyce had departed for the north-east in the summer, but under him he had developed the plucky First Division side into a tough-tackling, hardened Premier League unit who consistently overthrew those who dared to escape the Reebok Stadium with all three points.
