Photo: Gotham/GC Images Have you ever just looked at a celebrity outfit and thought, “HOW!?” How can someone wear that? Sure, a super bold, daring ensemble can prompt that sort of response, but this time around, my jaw dropped when I saw Diane Keaton’s New York Fashion Week ‘fit because, well, it was just too damn hot to be wearing what she was wearing. With fashion month in full swing, there’s certainly no shortage of outfit inspiration, and while some are very tailored to the current temperatures, it seems others are already summoning fall vibes even when it reached nearly 100 degrees in New York City over the weekend. Keaton’s outfit was the latter, with a coordinating three-piece (err, four-piece?) look that Annie Hall would certainly wear, too. Keaton stepped out for the Ralph Lauren New York Fashion Week show wearing all the fall essentials you need, plus the one staple I wear nonstop come October and November. She opted for gray, wide-leg trousers, a pants trend that’s showing zero signs of fading away, plus a checkered, longtime peacoat that she belted with a large leather belt (how chic!). But underneath the outerwear was the standout piece that I swear by when the temperatures start to drop. It’s stylish! It’s versatile! And it’s warm! Drum roll please… Madewell Brightside Crop Turtleneck Nordstrom Buy on Nordstrom $42 BP. Turtleneck Ribbed Top Nordstrom Buy on Nordstrom $29 I’m talking about that black turtleneck that Keaton wore underneath her coat. It’s ultra simple, which is part of its appeal, but it also elevates any outfit in seconds because, honestly, nothing is chicer than a nice turtleneck. It just has that something-something to it, which is why it’s a forever closet find that’s truly timeless and universally flattering. Whenever I’m in a rush, my black turtleneck comes to the rescue. I can tuck it into jeans, layer on a necklace, and slip into some suede boots, and I look good. That’s because there’s an inherent sleekness to the top, and it can easily be dressed up (or down) if you wish. No wonder it’s a key layering staple that’s been around forever, acting as mainstay in a slew of celebrity fall outfits, like Keaton’s and also Jennifer Lopez’s (and obviously, mine, though I’m no celeb). I’m summoning fall early because I simply cannot deal with this humidity anymore. So, summon the cooler weather with me by shopping for the one fall staple I swear by. Maybe once your new purchase arrives at your doorstep, so will the chillier fall weather. Fingers crossed!
