TODAY'S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY...GRACE JONES

Grace Beverly Jones was born 75 years ago in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Jamaica, is divorced and has a son.  She is a singer and songwriter, actress and model.

As a kid, she attended 2 different schools, then proceeded to high school, graduated and eventually entered college, taking Spanish as a main subject plus attending drama classes.  Once finished from her studies, Grace travelled to New York and applied to become a model and then moved to Paris when she was 22 years old.  There she met famous fashion designers who hired her to work for them.

In 1977, Jones pursued a music career and by the end of that decade released 3 studio albums.  During the 80s, Grace changed her music style to the new wave genre and recorded 6 more albums featuring cover versions of several artists.  She made a career breakthrough, particularly with her 1981 album ‘Nightclubbing’. 

In 1984, she starred alongside actor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie ‘Conan the Destroyer’, and the following year acted in the James Bond Film ‘A View to a Kill’.  After gaining popularity as an actress, Grace went back to recording albums and in 1985 had the UK Top 20 hit ‘Slave to the Rhythm’.

During the last 4 decades, Grace proceeded with both her music and acting careers.  She released one more album, embarked on a couple of tours, starred in several movies and appeared in various TV productions including series, documentaries and other shows.  She also often collaborated with various artists by appearing in their music videos, acting as backing vocalist etc.

To date, Jones received a Bravo Otto award, a Q award, The Voice of a Woman award and a Career Achievement award.
