Ahriska's Silent Hill Nurse Cosplay

27.01.2015 16:31

Silent Hill nurses have always been an iconic element of the famous horror game series, and they are a popular cosplay option among fans. Brazilian cosplayer Ahriska presents one of the best examples of a SH Nurse costume we’ve seen, and we were keen to learn more about how she made it, and her love for the Silent Hill series in general. You can read what she had to say below.

Are you a big Silent Hill fan? When did you first get into the series?

I really love Silent Hill! I still remember being scared to death watching my cousins play it when I was little, but still I felt good about it; the reactions were incredibly funny when the “normal” Silent Hill began to turn into the “otherworld”. When I grew a little more, I wanted to face those things by myself and get know the whole history, so I started playing it. I’m a big horror fan, and if I was to pick my “top 3 horror games”, SH would surely be there!

Which Silent Hill game is your favourite?

Silent Hill 2. Despite the first game being the “heart” of the series, the second has the most powerful history in my opinion. To follow James as he descends into his darkest self to realize what happened between him and Mary is not only exciting, but touching. Not to mention Monica Taylor Horgan’s fantastic narrating of Mary’s Letter… (I know the text by heart and even after many years, it still can make me cry)

Why did you decide to cosplay as a Silent Hill Nurse in particular?

The Nurses are a staple in SH, as much as the Pyramid Head. Every monster has symbolism in the game, and this is something that enchants me, demonstrating the whimsy nature of the creators. Particularly, as SH2 is my favorite game of the series, I like the Bubble Head Nurse and her relation with James’ s memories: they are super-sexy, but that doesn’t mean they were meant to seduce him. Actually, it’s the expression of his guilt for wanting more than what Mary could give him, and then for leaving her alone in her last moments of need.

Get dirty! (Haha XD) The Nurse isn’t a hard cosplay to make; the head may be the biggest challenge of it, but still: easily solved. Glue some foam in the shape of a mask, wrap it in bandage and voilá. What will truly make your nurse seem like she popped right out of the game is making it REALLY grubby (the cosplay AND you). You need to think about the character while you build it: who it is, what it does, where it has been walking, where is it from… For example, in my Nurse cosplay, I covered myself almost completely in ink, it was pretty messy. I used brown and copper ink to simulate that rust that covers the Otherworld city; black ink to remember the fire that took the town once and still burns in the underground… And obviously: red. Blood. As nurses deal with a whole bunch of injured people (and as they also hurt many people in the game :v ), I painted my hands red and passed them on the uniform like if injured people in despair were trying to grab her, to call her attention to help them, or as if they were defending from her attacks. You have already played the game, so now think about its history and make it “live action”.

Would you ever consider cosplaying as any other Silent Hill/Konami characters? If so, which would you pick to do?

You should ask me if I like breathing… ^^ For now, I have other cosplays already in progress, but I always wanted to play Heather Mason, from SH3. She’s fierce! …come to think of it: I already have the boots, the orange shirt, the blonde hair…
