Redneck Rampage is likely the best non-Apogee co-produced Build engine game. We loved helping Xatrix with their first big studio project--such amazingly talented guys. Sadly, Drew Markham, creative lead, passed away in 2018. He was also the genius behind Kingpin: Life of Crime.
I just played through these again recently, love the use of faux room-over-room. Such a nifty and seamless way of handling the limitations of Build at the time. Not to mention the texture artists did amazing jobs creating lighting effects that complement the hand cut shadows of the engine.
I remember I was probably too young to fully appreciate this game, as I was stuck in one of the first levels and never truly understood how to move ahead (not knowing anything about English was not helping too! :D) I find myself thinking about this game quite often, I think it is time to go find a copy and try to play it again the right way now! :D
Well TARRRRR-NATION. This is easily one of my favorite games ever. I downloaded the "optional cusspack" and never looked back.
It also has an incredible sound track, one of the best suited to its theme I've ever heard.
I remember Greg Goodrich showing me photos after he and his buddies got back from the road trip for the research for this game. He told me the plot they were developing and I just laughed my ass off because it was so beautifully bizarre and irreverent. Amazed this still hasn’t been made into a feature animated film yet.
There are still too few silly/wacky/irreverent games like Redneck Rampage in the market, I'm always thankful for anyone that pushes the storytelling space into new areas or ventures out of the typical tropes.
Kingpin was AMAZING, loved that game!
Fun times. Great memories. I vividly remember the nonsensical backlash over this game.
I did audio for this game. Such a fun game. The VO alone is worth it.
