The genus Lilium L. (Liliaceae), comprises about 100 species, which are mainly found in the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. The Himalayas are considered to be the centre of origin of the genus Lilium, with species that have spread throughout the rest of Eurasia and North America. According to phylogenetic analyses, L. martagon was the first species to colonise Europe. On a recent trip to the Andorran Pyrenees we found the only two species that occur on the Iberian Peninsula: L. martagon (pink) and L. pyrenaicum (yellow). L. martagon lives in meadows or forest glades, in cool places, at an altitude of 50-2100 m. It is found throughout the Euro-Siberian region of the Old World and the northern Mediterranean; in Spain it occurs in the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Pyrenean-Cantabrian axis. It flowers from June to August. L. pyrenaicum, on the other hand, is found only in the eastern Pyrenees, in the north of Spain and in the south of France, growing in forests and mountain meadows up to 2400 m. It flowers from May to July. #scientificillustration, #botanicalart, #liliumpyrenaicum, #liliummartagon, #andorranplants, #ilustracioncientifica, #artebotanico, #plantasandorranas
