In at number two in our countdown is a pocket-sized genius who was adored at his beloved Newcastle and in front of the Kop, Peter Beardsley.

Beardsley was one of the most captivating footballers of his generation.

In both the black and white of Newcastle, the red of Liverpool and on the international stage with England, he wowed crowds with his guile and sublime close-control.

At the creative heart of arguably the finest Liverpool XI ever to play the game under Kenny Dalglish in 1987-88, Beardsley scored some inspirational goals and his display in the 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Anfield will live long in the memory.

After being sold by Graeme Souness to Everton, Beardsley returned for a second spell in the black and white, when he played in Kevin Keegan's brilliant attacking Newcastle team.

Beardsley is currently Newcastle's football development manager.
