THE new owner of Manchester City said he hopes to recruit three top players within the next few hours.

Property developer Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim is part of the Abu Dhabi-based consortium which signed a deal, reported to be worth £150m, to take over the Blues.

Dr Al-Fahim, 31, will represent the new owners on the board at City although he said former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will remain as honorary chairman.

He said City fans should not be concerned about the takeover and that the club will sign up to three top players before the transfer deadline expires at midnight tonight.

Dr Al-Fahim said: "They will hear about new players today or tomorrow."

He added: "They (City fans) have to be optimistic and by closing a deal on one of the players today they can see we are serious in developing the club to be in the top four. There are three players we are discussing."

Dr Shinawatra signed a deal on Sunday night which will see a majority stake in the club bought by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development (ADUG).

The firm is believed to be linked to Abu Dhabi's royal family but it is not clear who has put up the money for the deal.

Dr Al-Fahim told the BBC that ADUG had "really deep pockets".

He added: "My ambition is to make this club one of the top four in the next three years."

Asked about the position of manager Mark Hughes, who has only been at City for a few weeks, Dr Al-Fahim said: "We will support him by bringing better players and it is his job to develop the club and bring it to a new level.

"It is a big mistake to change the managers and board members, I am not there to change for the sake of changing." Dr Al-Fahim said he would be flying to England on Thursday to meet Hughes and the staff at City.

Dr Al-Fahim said ADUG had been in talks to take over the club for two weeks and that a memorandum of understanding was signed in Abu Dhabi on Sunday night.

He said Thaksin had retained some shares in City and that he would remain as honorary chairman. "We are not buying the whole 100 per cent.

"But we are the majority shareholders. We will be controlling the club."

Dr Al-Fahim is a high profile businessman and is known as the Donald Trump of Abu Dhabi.

He has been photographed with Hollywood stars Leonardo Di Caprio and Pamela Anderson and is running an Apprentice-style reality TV show offering a business hopeful the chance to work in his property empire.
