Considers Sporting Lisbon exit a done deal
The Argentine defender Marcos Rojo has confirmed that Manchester United have made Sporting Lisbon a ¤20 million offer to sign him.
"It's a dream to play at Manchester United and I'm delighted to have the chance to work with [Louis] van Gaal. Leaving Sporting wasn't easy", Rojo told the Buenos Aires radio station, Continental, on Monday evening.
"It will be a wonderful experience. I hope I can adapt quickly to the style of play. When we were at Estudiantes, Veron told me a lot about the club", said the defender. "I would love to face Messi in this season's Champions League. I hope that happens", he said.
The 24-year-old full-back's market value skyrocketed after his outstanding performances for Argentina at the Brazil World Cup. He was one of Alejandro Sabella's go-to players in the competition, pulling off a controversial rabona in defence and netting a goal against Nigeria.
The player started his career at Estudiantes before signing for Spartak Moscow for $2 million, followed by his move to Sporting.
The defender has had a rocky relationship with the Portuguese club of late. Southampton offered ¤12 million for him recently, but Sporting turned down the offer and Rojo complained, earning him a one-game suspension from the club as a reprimand.
United have now come in with an offer of ¤20 million in cash and Nani going the other way on loan.
