Italy 1-0 England: Goal and highlights - Nations League 2022

Follow all the action live from the Stadio San Siro

Updated

Good afternoon everybody and welcome along to our MARCA in English UEFA Nations League live blog, wherein we'll be bringing you live updates as Italy take on England this Friday evening.

Italy and England have been evenly matched over their past few games. The two teams played to a goalless draw the last them they met in the UEFA Nations League, with that clash coming after the team from mainland Europe had prevailed over their rivals on penalties during the final of Euro 2020.

Currently paired together in League A Group 3, along with perennial powerhouses Germany, both England and Italy need a win as they currently make up third and fourth in the group, with England already aware that they can't reach the final stages.

Conversely, with one eye cast towards the World Cup, this could prove to be a big pre-tournament challenge for England, although their opponents won't be flying to Qatar.

The Azzurri will be the happier of the two sides at the break. More of the ball, and more of it in better areas, but still Mancini's men lack a clinical frontman, which is even more apparent given Immobile's absence. England have been little threat at the San Siro.

England boss Gareth Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I think subconsciously when you're winning you maybe don't reflect quite as deeply on why you are winning, or even some of the things that aren't quite right even though you are winning.

"When you lose like we did, then you reflect on everything and go really deep. That's not a bad process. I have been through a difficult run of results as a manager before and that's helpful because you know 'why'. If you didn't know 'why' poorer results happen, then that would be more of a concern."

England captain Harry Kane to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We want to bounce back and win games. Ideally, we would love to win both games and go into the World Cup full of confidence [and] on the up. I'm not going to panic too much if that's not the case.

"We have got a great team, we have had two great major tournaments in a row and ultimately that is what we are going to be judged on. We are going to use these two games to try and perform and to try implement the things we have been working on.

"Of course results are important to try and win the two games, but one way or another, ultimately it comes down to what we do in November."
