Charlize Theron has enjoyed a monumental amount of success in her life, and she has done so whilst having to overcome certain obstacles and traumas that can be traced back to her teenage years.
When she was 15 years old, she witnessed her mother fatally shoot her father in an act of self-defense back in June of 1991.
Charles Theron had reportedly been drinking so heavily that he violently threatened both the teenager and her mother, and she took decisive action to keep the pair safe.
We'll never fully know how this impacted Charlize's life and subsequent development as a human being, but she doesn't believe that it led her to the current path she walks, which sees her try to raise awareness for domestic violence charities and causes.
"I would say this. It's a simple correlation to make," Charlize Theron explained to Town & Country magazine.
"I think it's way more complicated than having just one night of trauma in your life."
What happened with Charlize Theron's father?
As mentioned previously, Charlize Theron witnessed her mother shoot her father to death right in front of her, although she was at an age where she could at least understand the underlying causes behind the incident which split her world in half.
"My father was so drunk that he shouldn't have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun," Charlize Theron had previously explained in an interview with NPR.
"My mom and I were in my bedroom leaning against the door because he was trying to push through the door.
"So, both of us were leaning against the door from the inside to have him not be able to push through, he took a step back and just shot through the door three times.
"None of the bullets hit us, which is just a miracle. I only knew him one way and that was as an alcoholic."
