Shane MacGowan has admitted he "dreaded" getting his teeth fixed, despite the fact years of neglect had left him with barely any.

Speaking in a Sky Arts documentary about the huge restorative mouth operation, the Pogues frontman - who has become famous for his bad gums, admitted: "I am dreading it, but it's got to be done."

Speaking about his childhood, he revealed his fear of the dentist had fueled his crooked teeth: "Everybody was scared of the dentist in those days.

"When I was very small I had teeth taken out by a string round the tooth and then put on the door handle there.

"They wouldn't tell you what they were going to do, they would just bang the door and out came the tooth."

But his troubles are now firmly behind him after he was fitted with twenty two new teeth - including a gold incisor.

Shane's oral issues were the result of years of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as constant fighting.

Back in 2009, he was forced to have his final tooth removed before being advised to wear dentures in future.

Despite his fears the 57-year-old decided to treat himself to implants after being persuaded by his girlfriend Victoria Mary Clarke.

He previously told the Irish Sun: "Victoria had hers done last year and I thought they were great, so I decided to go with the same dentist, Darragh.

"It was a bit swollen for the first few days but I’m feeling good now. I’m getting used to them now."

All in all Shane needed to attend numerous consultations before undergoing six operations over the course of six months.

Girlfriend Victoria has revealed that his new gnashers were actually based on those of actor Michael Fassbender .

She also said that the procedure has taken years off Shane's appearance.

Appearing on The Ray D'Arcy Show, she said: "He already looks so much younger. I think he looks about 20 years younger."

Shane's transformation is detailed in the new documentary - titled Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn,

The documentary will include the moving moment when Shane tucked into an apple for the first time in decades.
