Actress Uma Thurman visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, October 16, to discuss her involvement with Room to Grow, a nonprofit that helps families through the first three years of a baby's life. Host Jimmy Fallon, remembering the last time he'd seen Thurman, also asked after one of her own "babies": Actress and musician Maya Hawke.

"Your daughter was on our show," Fallon said. "Maya—she was performing, she sang, and you were here as a supportive mom. It was so cool!"

"Sneaking around in the back, dancing," Thurman nodded.

"I loved that, because I didn't get a chance to say, 'Oh by the way your mom, Uma Thurman, was rooting you on. I didn't want to make a big deal," Fallon said, as the two agreed that no kid wants to be embarrassed by their parents. Even 25-year-old Maya Hawke, Thurman's oldest of two children with actor Ethan Hawke, who plays Robin on Netflix series Stranger Things.

Uma Thurman reflects on being pregnant with Maya Hawke

Hawke's birth put Thurman on the path to getting involved with Room to Grow. "I was pregnant with Maya, and I lived in this brownstone in Greenwich Village," she explained. She had one neighbor friend her age, "I was pregnant and getting all nervous about it, like, 'how do I get ready for this baby? What am I gonna do? What do I need?"

When she noticed that her neighbor was quietly amassing baby items, it led to a conversation about how few resources there are for pregnant women and newborns in American communities. The exchange sparked Thurman's support of Room to Grow.

Fallon also brought up an exchange he and Thurman had back when she was expecting Maya Hawke 25 years ago. "You told me, 'Jimmy, if you're lucky enough to have kids, you have to read to them,'" adding that Ferninand was their top baby book at the time.
