Conservative media pundit Ann Coulter said on Thursday that if GOP candidate Nikki Haley becomes the Republican presidential nominee, she will definitely vote for President Joe Biden.
With Biden as the incumbent, he will likely be the Democratic nominee. While former President Donald Trump is the current GOP front-runner, Haley, former U.N. ambassador and South Carolina governor, has gained significant ground in polls.
Coulter wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday: "If Nikki's the nominee I will 100% vote for Biden. I can't take another open borders Republican. If we're going to wreck the country, let the Democrats do it."
Newsweek reached out to Haley's campaign via email for comment.
The conservative pundit is big on border security. She supported Trump during his 2016 run when he promised to Make America Great Again (MAGA) with tougher immigration policy. But she became critical of Trump after he failed to keep his biggest campaign promise while he was in office—to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border to stop the illegal crossings of migrants.
Border security has been a major concern, especially among Republicans with a surge of illegal migrants coming through the southern border in recent years. In the 2023 fiscal year, which ended in September, U.S. Border Patrol had 3.2 million encounters, according to agency data. Encounter data includes the patrol's Title 8 apprehensions, Office of Field Operations Title 8 inadmissibles, and Title 42 expulsions.
Coulter has emerged as a supporter of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 presidential campaign. DeSantis has been fighting with Haley for the second-place spot in the polls, but neither has been an outspoken critic of their biggest threat in the primaries—Trump.
The conservative pundit also reshared a post from lawyer Will Chamberlain.
"Remember folks: @AnnCoulter was the OG Trump surrogate Trump basically took her book ADIOS, AMERICA and turned it into his 2016 platform In 2024, Coulter supports @RonDeSantis. Is she a NeverTrumper? A neocon? Or is DeSantis simply the better America First candidate?" Chamberlain's post read.
Haley vs. DeSantis: Immigration Policy
Despite Coulter claiming that Haley supports "open borders," Haley has said that she wants to "close" the southern border and "defund sanctuary cities."
Sanctuary cities are places in the U.S. that limit or deny local law enforcement cooperation with federal agents who try to enforce immigration law.
Haley has also coined the phrase "catch and deport," which she uses to describe her campaign promise to immediately deport any immigrant who illegally entered the U.S.
DeSantis has taken a more aggressive approach when it comes to confronting migrants. He has said that he supported using "deadly force" against migrants crossing the border who are suspected of smuggling drugs.
"If the cartels are cutting through the border wall, trying to run product into this country, they're going to end up stone-cold dead as a result of that bad decision," DeSantis said at a press conference in June.
