Hahnemann (1755-1843) was a German doctor who pioneered the field of homeopathy. Based on the idea that "like cures like," homeopathy used various substances derived from poisonous plants that generated symptoms similar to diseases. The theory was that by producing the effect in the body, these substances would help cure the actual diseases themselves. The field was largely eclipsed by germ theory and is widely discredited by the scientific community today.
