    LaMotta earned himself the title of World Middleweight Champion after defeating Frenchman Marcel Cerdan on June 16, 1949 in Detroit. Upon his return home to the Bronx, the boxer was welcomed with a hometown hero's reception. He defended his title against Tiberio Mitri a year later during a fight at Madison Square Garden, which was named Fight of the Year by The Ring Magazine.

The fight would soon become one of LaMotta's most controversial after it was believed to be fixed. LaMotta was suspended and later admitted to throwing the fight to gain favor with the Mafia. "By [the fourth round], if there was anybody in the Garden who didn't know what was happening, he must have been dead drunk," he wrote in his book.
