Harrison Ford Bids Goodbye to Indiana Jones

It has been more than four decades since Harrison Ford leaped off the screen as Han Solo in the first “Star Wars” movie, laying the foundation for a blockbuster career in which he has become the face of some of the most successful movie franchises in film history. He has appeared in over 70 movies, with a combined worldwide box office gross of more than $9 billion. By now, it would seem, he has nothing left to prove.

His latest movie, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” is part of the five-film “Indiana Jones” adventure franchise that Ford kicked off when he was in his late 30s. Now, at 80, he’s bringing it to a conclusion.

Ford has always been more than just another charismatic Hollywood action star. He has the swagger and the smirk, which were put to work presenting complex heroes with flaws and self-doubt, including Rick Deckard, who battles bioengineered humanoids in “Blade Runner” and, later, “Blade Runner 2049.”




But the actor is not slowing down, much less stepping away to spend more time at his ranch in Wyoming. In “1923,” a spinoff of the popular television series “Yellowstone,” he plays Jacob Dutton, a weathered and weary rancher. It is his first major television role.

Ford also stars in the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking,” in which he plays Paul, the senior member of a psychotherapeutic practice, an old-school boss with a sharp tongue and a well-hidden soft heart.

Since his earliest days as Han Solo, Ford has been wary of being typecast as a go-to action hero. “I always went from a movie for me to a movie for them,” he said, referring to directors — and audiences — with a taste for action-hero blockbusters. “I don’t want to work for just one audience.”
