You haven't known Yoshi's real name for the past 20 years

The character from Super Mario World that we've been casually referring to simply as Yoshi for the past 20-plus years has a much longer, less catchy name, it turns out. His full name is T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas.

That bit of surprising trivia comes courtesy of a Nintendo Character Guide published in 1993, from which Blake Harris, the author of Console Wars, has been posting to his Twitter account today. The guide provides a bio for Mr. Munchakoopas, which explains his relationship to Mario.

Yoshi, properly known as T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas, had been held captive in an egg until Mario (homo nintendonus) bopped along and rescued him. Instantly, the young dinosaur and the plumber became fast friends. Together, they set out to rescue Yoshi's dinosaur pals from the wickedness of Bowser.

Mario's scientific name, homo nintendonus, may also be news to many Nintendo fans. We've reached out to Nintendo of America to verify whether Mr. Munchakoopas is canonically Yoshi's real identity and in an attempt to find out what else they've been hiding from us for the past two decades.
