Lone Wolf and Cub movie in the works with Fast and Furious director

Lone Wolf and Cub, the landmark manga series from Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, is being adapted into a new movie, with director Justin Lin (Fast Five, Star Trek Beyond) and Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven, Sleepy Hollow) attached to the project.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Lin plans to produce the film and “intends to direct.”

Lin’s involvement (and interest in) bringing Lone Wolf and Cub to movie theaters has been a long time coming. Kamala Films acquired rights to the manga series back in 2012, with Lin then attached to the project. Lin said in 2016, during a press tour for Star Trek Beyond, that Lone Wolf and Cub was still on his plate.

Koike and Kojima’s Lone Wolf and Cub manga ran from 1970 to 1976. The manga told the story of Ogami Itto, an executioner for the shogun, and his young son Daigoro on a journey of revenge after their family and household are murdered. The manga was published in North America in 1987 by First Comics, then later republished in a more authentic form by Dark Horse Comics.

The story of Lone Wolf and Cub has been previously adapted in a series of six films that were released in Japan between 1972 and 1974.

Lin’s directing career includes the 2002 film Better Luck Tomorrow, four films in the Fast and Furious franchise — including its best entries, Tokyo Drift and Fast Five — and 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
