If you were a fan of grunge, alternative rock and MuchMusic in the 1990s, you may remember The Gandharvas.

The band was headlined by Prince George resident Paul Jago and claimed fame with its single “The First Day of Spring,” which was nominated for MuchMusic’s Video of the Year.

The Gandharvas released three full-length records with Watch Music/MCA Hollywood and toured North America from 1994 to 1999.

Other popular singles including “Downtime” and “Watching The Girl” were favourites on MuchMusic and Canadian and American radio, earning them several awards and nominations, including Junos and MMVAs.

Jago is now performing an upcoming show in Prince George called “Unearthing The Gandharvas” for one night of exclusive music released by the band.

Opening the evening will be modern rocker extraordinaire, Good Egg Records’ Britt AM with her full band.

If you were wondering, the band's namesake, Gandharvas, are musical spirits in Hinduism.

Jago breathes new life and authenticity into the music of the Gandharvas, stripping it down to just vocals and guitar.

Jago will be accompanied by his brother Noel, virtuoso percussionist and original studio drummer for The Gandharvas.

Prodigious multi-instrumentalist, northern B.C.’s Karl Wyssen, will also be joining in on bass guitar, while Aidyl Jago will also lend her soulful vocals to The Jago Family Values Band, making it a true family affair.

Prince George-based audio/visual production company, Russell AV, will be treating the audience to a spectacular sound and light show to complement the soundscapes of the original Gandharvas repertoire.

The concert will be video recorded and distributed free online for Gandharvas fans around the globe.

Jago currently resides in B.C.'s northern capital with his young family, where their family business, Sound Factory, acts as both a music store and music school.

He's also a rocker in more ways than one as he's also been working as an Exploration Geologist in the southwestern U.S. and northern B.C. since completing his Master's degree in Earth Sciences in 2008.

He continues to write and perform music while unearthing gold and copper deposits.

Jago also has deep roots in northern B.C. as his father is Charles Jago, former president of UNBC and namesake of the Northern Sports Centre.

Unearthing The Gandharvas will take place on Saturday, Dec. 28 at the Prince George Playhouse (2626 Recplace Dr.) at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are $20 (plus service charge) and can be purchased at Central Interior Tickets.
