Santa Cruz’s Autumn Hays tied for ninth place on Sunday at the World Surf League’s U.S. Air Force Super Girl Surf Pro, a Women’s Qualifying Series 3,000-point event at Jax Beach Pier in Jacksonville, Florida.

Hays was eliminated by Caroline Marks of Boca Raton, 15.50 to 7.17, in the Round of 16.

On Saturday, Hays took second to Costa Rica’s Leilani McGonagle with a 6.96 total in the Round of 32, and second to Canada’s Erin Brooks with a 10.33 total in the Round of 64.

Hays entered the event tied for ninth on the North America 2022/2023 Women’s QS Rankings.

Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller, ranked No. 19, and No. 22 Esme Brigham were ousted in the Round of 64. Brigham tied for 33rd place and Miller tied for 49th.

NBA G League

At G League Ignite 125, Santa Cruz Warriors 115: Lester Quinones scored 25 points and Ryan Rollins scored 24 in the Warriors’ loss Saturday in front of 4,077 fans at The Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nevada.

Jayce Johnson had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Cruz (2-3).

Mojave King scored 28 points to lead the Ignite (1-3). He made seven of their whopping 19 3-pointers. The Ignite shot 60% (19 of 30) from beyond the arc, better than they shot from the field 50% (49 of 90).

The Warriors host the South Bay Lakers (2-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

UC Santa Cruz 78, at Caltech 60: Ashley Kowack scored 16 points and the Banana Slugs won their season opener Saturday.

Kaylee Murphy had 15 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for UCSC, and Lindsay Zientek had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals off the bench.

UCSC had just nine assists, but shot 47.7% (31 of 65) from the field and won the rebound battle 40-31.

UCSC plays at Whittier (0-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Men’s basketball

UCSC 85, at Chapman 81: Zino Okah had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Matt Malone won his first game as the Banana Slugs’ coach on Saturday in Orange.

Ian McCloskey scored 16 points for UCSC (1-1), Avri Finch had 15 points and nine rebounds, and Tyler Kessinger also scored 15 points.

UCSC dominated on the boards, 50-33, and recorded 10 steals.

UCSC plays at Cal Maritime (0-4) in Vallejo on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

At Cabrillo 90, Napa Valley 55: The Seahawks secured their first win of the season Saturday. Scoring wasn’t made available on the CCCAA website.

The Seahawks (1-1) face Santa Rosa in the Shasta Invitational in Redding on Thursday at 5 p.m.

College football

Hartnell 41, Cabrillo 13: Raphael Bendo threw for a pair of touchdowns, but the Seahawks lost in their Coast Conference and regular-season finale Saturday.

He connected with Nathaniel Bendo on an 84-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, and AJ Jett on a 16-yard pass in the third quarter.

Kobe Hatten had 21 carries for 103 yards for Cabrillo (2-8, 1-5).

Abraham Ramirez made nine tackles for the Seahawks’ defense. Keyon Vaughns and Saul Samoza had sacks.
