Rebecca Romijn might have been dreading the press line at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night because she probably knew she was going to be asked about ex-husband John Stamos‘ memoir, If You Would Have Told Me. The 51-year-old actress finally broke her silence, and it’s hard not to have empathy toward the awkward situation she’s been placed in.

“I was very surprised by all of that, incredibly shocked actually,” Romijn diplomatically told Entertainment Tonight. “I was sort of blindsided by it. But you know, I don’t really want to help him sell his books based on those headlines. So that’s all I really want to say about it.” It sounds like she wants to move on and everyone should respect that because Romijn’s second husband, Jerry O’Connell, revealed in a recent interview that Stamos’ claims affected his family, especially their 15-year-old twins, Dolly and Charlie.

There was an interest in my household,” O’Connell told Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM show. “But it’s so funny, after hearing his interview beginning to end on [The Howard Stern Show], any interest of reading the book went away. My children are 14 and they see what we see now. There’s no hiding, there’s no more keeping things from them. It’s pretty crazy when your kids come out for breakfast and go, ‘Hey mom, your ex has a book out and called you the devil. What are your thoughts?'”

The Full House star made headlines while promoting his book to People and Howard Stern because his words felt downright cruel toward Romijn. He admitted he didn’t give her any heads up that he was writing about their former marriage, so it’s understandable how Romijn and O’Connell reacted. In addition to Stamos’ claims about Romijn’s alleged infidelity during their marriage, and how she reportedly “emasculated” him as her career rose in Hollywood, he also seemed to blame his ex for their split. However, he didn’t take much responsibility for his side of the equation.

“In my mind back then, she was the devil, and I just hated her,” he told People. “I couldn’t believe how much I hated her, and it ruined my life.” While he conceded that he played “some part” in their divorce, it doesn’t seem like he’s fully there yet. “You start thinking, ‘She wasn’t the devil. Maybe I was as much to blame as her,'” he added.

Stamos probably didn’t deserve Romijn’s gracious response to his memoir, but breaking her silence may have put the situation behind her for good. Hopefully, she won’t ever have to discuss her ex and his memoir again.
