As many people know, lovebirds Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder recently uploaded their first TikTok together, where they pay homage to their vampire roles and have a sweet PDA moment. This video went instantly viral, and has been on every social media. While many think the video is beyond adorable, some are reminding everyone of this disturbing incident between the couple that has left people shocked, appalled, and disgusted.
After the video was published, one X user wrote, “every time i see them i just remember that he tried to force nikki to get pregnant by destroying her birth control pills, recorded her having a breakdown about it and then made fun of it in an interview where she was present.”

As you can imagine, many fans were responding with, “what do you mean?!” So we did some digging into the incident this X user, along with many others, has brought up.
So back in 2017, the pair appeared on the podcast called Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy Podcast. During this talk, Somerhalder revealed that he threw out all of Reed’s birth control pills, and flushed them down the toilet after their discussion about having a family. He reflected saying it was hard to “pop all those suckers out.”
(Birth control pills, as many know, are used for many other reasons besides birth control, and can heavily affect your mind and body if you drastically stop).
There’s also reportedly a video of Reed crying over the incident, but they insisted in the podcast that the decision to start a family was made with their friends. Somerhalder also joked in the podcast, “Actually, now thinking about it, I guess I kind of decided (to start a family).”

Now, this incident rattled many people at the time, and it’s rattling people today. And you may be wondering, did Reed or Somerhalder ever address this? Reed responded to one article that went viral at the time, asserting that she didn’t feel as though she was a victim of anything and that the interview was supposed to be a light-hearted interview between a married couple.
“When you actually listen to the podcast (which I’m sure you didn’t) you’ll hear how ‘unforced’ I felt,” she wrote, per People. “Ha! Also, ‘unconsented’ bull—- is you speaking on my behalf in a story admittedly taken out of context for the purpose of stirring up drama WITHOUT my approval.”
Soon after, they released a joint statement saying, “To anyone who has been affected by reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry. We never expected a lighthearted interview we did poking fun at EACH OTHER and how WE chose together to get pregnant.”
They added, “A goofy moment in Barcelona with our two best friends and the anticipation of our journey together as we went from two to three, to turn into something representing a very serious matter.”
Since then, they’ve seemingly moved past the incident. Reed and Somerhalder were first linked together in July 2014, and within less than a year, they tied the knot at Topanga Canyon in Malibu, California, on April 26, 2015. Since then, they’ve welcomed two children. Reed and Somerhalder have a daughter named Bodhi Soleil, born on July 25, 2017, and a son, whose name they haven’t disclosed yet, born on June 29, 2023.
They seem as happy as ever, and quite unbothered from their past incident. While the internet never forgets, and still clearly remembers this controversial incident, it seems Reed and Somerhalder are focused on having a good time with their new account.
