Gustave Courbet
Painter - France
1819 - 1877

Who was Gustave Courbet?

Gustave Courbet, a French painter born in the 19th century, is considered the father of Western modern art. Breaking from the strict traditions of the art world, Courbet scandalized the Parisian art scene with his new painting movement, Realism, which drew attention to the harsh realities of the modern age.

His paintings, primarily portraits of friends, family and himself, landscapes, peasant life, nudes and group scenes are characterized by their stark contrast in light, somber color palette, and a prioritization of capturing reality over idealized imagery.
