Korea Open tennis: Maria Kirilenko beats third seed to make quarter-finals

Wildcard Maria Kirilenko fought back after going a set down to claim the scalp of third seed Klara Koukalova at the Korea Open on Thursday.

The Russian world number 155 lost the first set to the 2008 champion of the Czech Republic but struck back to record a 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-0 victory in two hours and six minutes and set up a quarter-final clash with Kaia Kanepi of Estonia.

The 2012 beaten finalist Kanepi, who is seeded sixth here, saw off another Czech in Kristyna Pliskova to progress thanks to a 3-6 6-3 6-2 comeback win over the world number 97 in Seoul.

Fourth seed Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia claimed a comfortable 6-2 6-2 victory over Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer to set up a last-eight tie against America's Christina McHale.

Also on Thursday, 21-year-old American qualifier Nicole Gibbs, who saw off Heather Watson in the first round, bounced back to defeat Montenegro's Danka Kovinic 1-6 6-4 7-6 (7-5). Gibbs faces Karolina Pliskova for a place in the semi-finals.
