3. Vetiver Grass
Scientific name:
โข Chrysopogon zizanioides (reclassified)
โข Vetiveria zizanioides(former)
โข Family: Poaceae or Gramineae (Grasses)
โข It is native to India, called โkhusโ
Varieties:
Origin:
โข Chrysopogon zizanioides โ Asia -subcontinent
โข Chrysopogon nigratana -- Southern Africa
โข Chrysopogon nemoralis -- South East Asia
4. โข Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides
L.); โrimorasโ or morasโ is a type of
perennial grass that grows in places with
warm climate such as the Philippines.
โข It appears in dense clumps with leaves
that are erect, have rough edges, and
are rather stiff. Vetiver grass is easy to
plant and cultivate.
โข It grows fast through tillering and can be
found in a wide range of area from
highlands to lowlands in various soil
condition
5. โข FLOWERS. The mature Vetiver grass
bears maroon grain- like flowers but these
are sterile and therefore cannot
propagate on their own.
โข LEAVES. The blade-like leaves of
Vetiver grass can reach 50-150 cm in
length. Its width is normally 0.8 cm.
โข Vetiver culms with nodes
6. โข CLUMP DIAMETER. It can reach up to 30 cm
and above
โข LIFESPAN. In tropical environment, It has
been shown to survive 10 - 100 years
(Greenfield)
โข pH 3.0 -11.0
โข Temperature -15 to 55oC
โข Can survive complete submergence at least 3
Months
โข It is saline tolerant, tolerant to heavy metals,
and to all herbicides except glyphosate
7. โข ROOTS. The roots of Vetiver grass can
grow from 3 to 6 m deep which enables it to
control soil moisture and nutrients
effectively.
โข The vetiver root system does not have
lateral roots (stolons or rhizomes) It cannot
move laterally.
โข The roots have a tensile strength of โ that
a mild steel and when planted in hedges
with increase soil sheer strength up to 45%.
8. Vetiver System
โข The Vetiver System (VS) is a descriptive
name containing many different
applications of the Vetiver Grass
Technology (VGT) that when applied for a
specific use can generate multiple
secondary benefits.
Ex. When Vetiver grass is planted as a hedgerow
across the sloping contour of a land mass, it forms a
very dense barrier that slows down and spreads
rainfall runoff. This method of planting vetiver for
soil conservation purposes is known as the Vetiver
System.
9. Slope stabilization
โขIt can be used to strengthen and
stabilize sloping lands and other
structures
โขVetiver grass can be used as an
effective measure to prevent the
occurrence of landslides in sloping
areas.
USES:
10. Riverbank Protection
โข can also be used to strengthen
and stabilize structures such as the
sides of roads, bridges, canals and
railways among
others.
11. Soil and water conservation
โข In terms of soil loss, the presence of vetiver was observed to
minimize soil erosion in the area
Soil moisture improvement
โข Vetiver System is an effective, simple and cheap way to
maintain soil moisture and nutrient content in sloping lands
used for agricultural purposes.
Recycling soil nutrients
โข Based on our study, vegetable yield in areas with vetiver
grass is higher than in areas without vetiver.
โข If used as hedgerow in sloping vegetable areas, vetiver grass
occupies just a small amount of space and does not compete
with crops in terms of nutrient absorption due to its longer
roots
12. โข Pest control

13. Vetiver as a
Livestock forage
โข Production of cattle and goats using
vetiver as the main source of feed in
China.
โข Protection of farm infrastructure
(canals, drains, roads, and building
sites).
14. Benefits:
โข It can be used as raw material for
handicraft
โข LEAVES. It can be woven into baskets,
bags, mats, tissue holders, wallets, slippers,
home decors, trinkets, key chains, and
many more.
โข Results of our study show that farmers
can earn up to 30-60% profit from each
Vetiver handicraft sold.
15. โข It can be used as
phytoremediation
* Clean polluted water

has a variety of
medicinal
properties.
โ Because of its
calming
properties, it is
frequently used to
