Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita

Tsuguharu Foujita (1886–1968), born in Tokyo, Japan, was a distinctive figure of the 20th-century Parisian avant-garde, blending Western and Eastern artistic traditions. Moving to Paris in 1913, he became an iconic character in the bohemian art scene, associating with luminaries like Picasso and Modigliani. Foujita’s style was celebrated for its synthesis of traditional Japanese ink techniques with modern French aesthetics. His eclectic subjects included everything from self-portraits to Parisian café scenes, nudes, and cats. Converting to Catholicism later in life, his work took a spiritual turn, culminating in his design of the Foujita Chapel in Reims.
