LISBON, Portugal — Paulo Bento has signed a contract extension that will see him remain in charge of the Portuguese national football team for an additional two years.

The Portuguese Football Federation announced Wednesday it is extending the 44-year-old coach’s contract up to the 2016 European Championship finals in France.

His current contract ended after this year’s World Cup in Brazil, where Portugal starts in Group G with Germany, the United States and Ghana.

Bento took charge in 2010 and guided Portugal the Euro 2012 semifinals.
