Giovani dos Santos declines Mexico's call-up for Copa America 2016

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

The United States' biggest rivals, Mexico, has run into an interesting situation with their Copa America Centenario roster. One of their most talented players, LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos, has declined a call-up for this summer's special anniversary tournament.

USMNT fans know all too well how impactful Dos Santos can be for the Mexico national team. He's a player capable of producing some individual pieces of skill that can single-handedly win a match.

"Giovani himself declined the invitation," Mexico manager, Juan Carlos Osorio, said in a news conference on Tuesday. "To be ethical, what was spoken about will stay between the two of us."

Dos Santos has been at odds with the national team since last year's Gold Cup over playing time and his club situation.

Mexico will also be without Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela, who was left off the roster because Osorio felt his club form didn't warrant his selection.

Despite El Tri being without two of their most talented players, they'll still bring along a rather impressive 23-man squad.
