Julian Green scores in Greuther Fürth win

A good start coming out of the international break.

Julian Green is still on a tear. The United States international scored a stoppage time goal in Greuther Fürth’s 4-1 victory over Holstein Kiel at the Stadion am Laubenweg. The USMNT attacker latched onto a ball from David Atanga and finessed his diving shot past the wrong-footed keeper:

Green entered the match as a substitute in the 69th minute, replacing Lukas Gugganig. German-American Kenneth Kronholm was in goal for Holstein Kiel.

Greuther Fürth is currently in first place in the 2. Bundesliga with 11 points from five matches. The Shamrocks face off against Heidenheim next Sunday.

Green is coming off a reasonably strong international break with the USMNT, appearing against Brazil and Mexico. His performance in the latter match drew positive reviews, particularly for his work rate.

While Green is still a relatively young 23 years old, he shoulders out-sized — and probably unfair — expectations that have perhaps hindered his career. He’ll never reach the imagined heights some envisioned for him after beginning his career with Bayern Munich and scoring in the 2014 World Cup, but there is still a role for him to play with the national team. The USMNT is always looking for dynamic attackers and it appears that Green is carving out a niche with Greuther Fürth. He recently extended his contract with the second division club through 2020, telling TZ playing time is “the most important thing.”
