Bobby Wood called up for USMNT friendly, claims 1860 Munich

Sebastian Widmann

Bobby Wood will be on the United States roster when they play the Czech Republic on September 3, according to 1860 Munich. The young striker's club said that he has been named to the roster, although U.S. Soccer said that he was only named to the preliminary roster so to say he made the team for the friendly is premature.

Wood has played for the senior team once before, against Bosnia and Herzegovina last August. He didn't make much of an impact in that match, nor has he for 1860 Munich, but he is still just 21 years old. He made his debut for the 2. Bundesliga team in 2011 and played in 13 matches last season. He's shown flashes of his potential, putting himself in dangerous spots and making good runs, but the goals have yet to come. That is the next step for the Hawaii native.

Aron Johannsson and Terrence Boyd will miss the friendly through injury and with it being just one match, Jurgen Klinsmann is likely going to call in a team heavy on European-based players. That further shrinks his player pool, especially at striker, and makes a call up like Wood all the more sensible.

The U.S. roster is expected to be announced by the end of the week, with players reporting to training camp as soon as their weekend matches are over.
