Jermaine Jones says he’ll retire from USMNT after 2018 World Cup

In a very interesting podcast appearance, Jermaine Jones made a host of newsworthy comments regarding his critics and haters. Talking to Herculez Gomez and Max Bretos on their ESPN podcast, the 35-year-old also revealed that the 2018 World Cup in Russia will be his last act as a USMNT player, should he get there.

“I have the goal to go to the World Cup. After the World Cup, trust me, I’ll give up my spot to everyone.”

“I missed 2010, I missed 2006. 2014 was something special and I want to go to this one and represent my country again. After that, I’ll watch the national team on TV, I will support them, but you will not see me in a jersey anymore.”

Jones missing the 2010 World Cup was a huge blow for Bob Bradley’s side. If he’s fit and in-form there’s no telling how far that side progresses. In 2014, he was arguably the best player on the field. Hopefully he gets one more huge World Cup stage to show he is in fact a big-tournament player. After that, he says he’ll ride off into the sunset.
