Indie music fans are lamenting the loss of one of their favorite couples, Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and She & Him singer/actress Zooey Deschanel. A rep for Deschanel confirmed Tuesday that their two-year marriage is over.
A source told Us Weekly that "it was mutual and amicable" and that "there was no third party involved."
The two met three years ago when their mutual manager introduced them. According to MTV, they married near Seattle in September 2009 shortly after Gibbard proposed with a three-carat diamond and platinum Neil Lane ring.
"I was just awestruck that she was even talking to me," he told New York Magazine recently.
Neither @ZooeyDeschanel or @Gibbstack have publicly spoken on the breakup through their Twitter accounts.
Though the parting was amicable, MTV is speculating that too much time apart may have caused the breakup. Gibbard, who also records as a solo artist and as The Postal Service, released his seventh album with Death Cab For Cutie, "Codes and Keys," in May.
Deschanel, meanwhile, has been busy with her new Fox TV show "New Girl" and also released a Christmas album with M. Ward (as She & Him) last month. The sometimes movie star also performed the National Anthem at the World Series.
Though they never recorded music together, the quirky duo did sometimes share the stage. Here's a video of them performing the Everly Brothers' "Dream" together:
