Good morning, Upper East Siders! Gossip Girl here with a little throwback insider info regarding one Serena van der Woodsen and the infamous moment when she casually tossed her very ‘00s cell phone in the trash. What was going on there, S?

As many fans rewatch the show in anticipation of the forthcoming HBO Max reboot, little moments like S’s trash can toss have made their way back into our collective consciousness. The phone throw went viral on Twitter and ended up being noticed by Gossip Girl writer (and reboot showrunner) Joshua Safran, who gave fans some insight into why S threw her flip phone away instead of deleting the pic of herself and Blair.

According to Joshua, it was supposed to look that nonchalant, as though Serena had no care in the world about her phone. “I remember discussing this in the writers room as if it were no big deal. As if it were throwing away a coffee cup,” he shared in a tweet. Hey, when you’re Serena van der Woodsen, money, phones, toxic relationships, and glamorous outfits really do grow on trees, so we kind of understand why she oh-so-casually threw her phone away. Another one was probably delivered to her five minutes later, and clearly, recycling was not a priority in the flip phone era.

One fan chimed in to say, “I like to think all the writers looked, acted and dressed just like David and Alexis from Schitt's Creek.” To which Safran responded, “This is not wholly inaccurate.”

Fans have been making the most of funny, absurd Gossip Girl scenes, including wardrobe malfunctions and Blake Lively’s behind-the-scenes sweatpants making a sneaky appearance in a scene. Though the OG GG has been off the air for years, it’s never far from our hearts and minds, and we’d never throw it in the trash in favor of its new little sibling, ridiculous moments and all!
