The agent of British actor Lucy Gordon, who was found hanged in her Paris flat on Wednesday, has said she is "baffled and devastated" by the death.

Gordon, who acted in Spider-Man 3, was found dead at her 10th arrondissement apartment on Wednesday, two days before her 29th birthday.

Her agent, Elizabeth Simpson, said Gordon was "sparkling, warm-hearted, touching and generous" and her death was a "wholly unexpected tragedy".

Gordon's death was "almost certainly suicide", police in Paris said. A postmortem has been ordered.

Today, Simpson said: "Lucy Gordon was an actress of great talent. She had just made a dramatic breakthrough in her career with La Vie Heroique, a biopic about Serge Gainsbourg, in which she played the role of Jane Birkin.

"She was sparkling, warm-hearted, touching and generous and we will miss her sorely.

"My team and I are baffled and devastated by this wholly unexpected tragedy and our sympathy goes out to her family and also the director, cast and crew who recently completed principal photography in Paris."

Gordon's movie cameraman boyfriend, Jerome Almeras, reportedly raised the alarm about her death. He burst into a nearby shop calling for help, according to Gala magazine.

Rushing back upstairs with the shopkeeper in la Rue des Petites Ecuries, he found Gordon dead.

A close friend of Gordon, who would have turned 29 today, said she had been badly affected by the recent suicide of a friend in England.

Yesterday, Gordon's relatives paid tribute to the "light of our lives" and said her death had come as "a complete shock" to them all.

Speaking from the family home in Oxford, her father, Richard Gordon, said: "We have always been immensely proud of her and her achievements. We love her so much.

"She was called Lucy and she has lived up to that. She has been the light of our lives, me and my wife Sue, and daughter Katie.

"She was a lovely, generous, unselfish person who gave her all for others and thought of others before herself.

"She has been doing what she loved and what she wanted to do for the last many years.

"She has been a natural actress all her life, since she was about two. She's always loved being on stage and in front of the camera and she has kept all her naturalness and charm all the way through.

"She has been the most beautiful daughter. We are obviously devastated."

Mr Gordon said his daughter loved playing her latest role as Birkin. He said his daughter spent much of her childhood and summer holidays in France, spoke French and recently moved to Paris from New York.

Gordon appeared in a dozen films, including the third instalment of Spider-Man, in which she played the reporter Jennifer Dugan.

She made her film debut in 2001 in Perfume and in 2002 she starred in the historical drama The Four Feathers. The cast included the Australian actor Heath Ledger, who died of a drugs overdose in his New York apartment last year.

Gordon acted in the French comedy Cineman, which is due out later this year, and played alongside Audrey Tautou in the romantic comedy The Russian Dolls.
