French club to leave punishment to authorities

The French club Bastia have decided not to punish Brandao after the striker head-butted the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta at the end of their Ligue 1 match on Saturday.

In a statement on Monday, Bastia said they will leave any decision up to the sporting authorities, but added they “reserve the right to take further action in the matter.”

After Bastia’s 2-0 loss to PSG, Brandao waited for Thiago Motta in the tunnel and head-butted the Italy international, who was left with blood pouring from his broken nose.

Bastia said they “condemn without any ambiguity the gesture of our forward” but added that they “also deplore the equally unacceptable behaviour of certain players who don’t stop insulting and provoking their opponents.”

The PSG president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, called for Brandao, 34, to be banned for life.
