Yuri Zhirkov scored with a spectacular volley as Russia finished their pre-World Cup friendlies with a 2-0 win over Morocco in Moscowon Friday.

Zhirkov made sure of the win in the 58th minute with his first international goal after centre-back Vasili Berezutski put Russia in front on the half hour from a corner. But there were injury worries for Fabio Capello’s side as captain Roman Shirokov and midfielder Denis Glushakov missed the game.

Later, Shirokov was ruled out of the finals because of an Achilles tendon injury and was replaced in the squad by Pavel Mogilevets. The 32-year-old midfielder, who finished the Russian domestic season on loan at FC Krasnodar from Zenit St. Petersburg, suffered the injury in a game against Lokomotiv Moscow on April 26 and had not played since.

Mogilevets was dropped from the squad on Monday. Glushakov was injured before the match but later told state television he remains fit for the tournament.
