gum-thing different

From Cheryl Tweedy to Cristiano Ronaldo and Victoria Beckham, these celebs have a LOT to thank the tooth fairy for

Most celebrities aren't blessed with a mouthful of teeth so white they'd give Tippex a run for its money, they've had to spend thousands - and endure unimaginable pain at the hands of a dentist's scalpel and drill - to flash gnashers as bright at the paparazzi bulbs they're always posing in front of.

AN old Japanese proverb claims 'fortune will call at the smiling gate'... but what if your teeth look like a broken fence?

Thanks to Hollywood stars - and Simon Cowell - having perfectly straight, Tippex-white teeth is the ultimate dental goal.

But sadly, a megawatt millionaire smile doesn't come cheap.

Thankfully these celebs were able to afford to invest in a new set of gnashers - and looking at the before and after photos, it's proved to be money well spent.

Transforming a mouth from gummy to great is no small job, and in some cases involves a dentist filing away the enamel of the natural tooth so a new porcelain veneer can be cemented on top of the stump.

The needed work isn't always that drastic, with some dentists suggesting a 'gum lifts', a procedure to insert 'missing' incisors, or use a bleaching treatment to completely change the colour of a person's teeth.

As a fresh-faced pop hopeful back in 2002, Cheryl's showed off a naturally crooked smile.

Fast forward to 2009, the Girls Aloud singer was on the other side of the judging panel with a set of gnashers to rival her boss Simon Cowell's.

At the time the Daily Mail claimed that Cheryl was spending "£8,000-a-year on her teeth and £1,500 on whitening every year."

She spoke to the publication about how she had an Invisalign brace which she was wearing every night as part of her quest for the perfect smile.

Posh Spice's pout might have been more than a side effect of being made to dress like she was on her way to a funeral throughout the Spice Girls' heyday.

The mum-of-four was labelled miserable for hardly ever smiling... until 2004 when suddenly her smile looked very different.

She also started smiling MORE, giving fans an eyeful of a new megawatt grin.

In 2013 an MTV special called Miley: The Movement gave fans a glimpse in to her life... and in her mouth.

Fans were more interested in her new look smile than the contents of the one hour documentary that followed Miley's transformation from child star to “creative young woman in a period of radical self-discovery.”

Sadly for the Wrecking Ball singer, just a few months later she had to have FIVE of her teeth removed... and typically she put a picture of the dodgy pegs on Instagram.

Tom Cruise

Thankfully for Tom, it wasn't a mission impossible for a dentist to give him the A-lister smile he deserved.

But it wasn't a total piece of cake, and Tom has actually been left with a bizarre 'mono tooth' right in the centre of his upper gums.

It's believed that the star has had so much dental work that his whole top row of teeth are off centre.

Fellow Girls Aloud-er Nicola Roberts followed in Cheryl's footsteps and invested in a new smile.

Nicola admitted that she "always felt like the ugly one" in the chart topping girl band, so splashed out £13,000 on a new smile to boost her confidence.

But after two years of earning big bucks at Manchester United, he achieved the ultimate dental goal... an ice white smile.

It was estimated that his veneers cost £800 apiece, and took his total cost for his new smile to £20,000.

A dentist told The Sun: “His ultra-white teeth are now perfect and the veneers bring out his good looks.”

A dentist told Star Magazine that he believes the Hollywood hearthrob had to have veneers fitted as he's a teeth-grinder.

According to Jonathan Abenaim, D.M.D, George had quite a lot of work done back in 2008.

He said: "When you grind your teeth, they get shorter.

"To restore the original look, the dentist has to lengthen teeth with porcelain veneers or crowns."

He added that he thought George had had a "smile lift," a surgical procedure involving a laser that removes a few millimetres of gum to reveal more teeth.

In 2006, the ex-Oasis founder revealed his consistent drug use meant that his teeth had starting falling out.

Referring to why he quit drugs eight years prior in 1998, he told the Irish Examiner: "My teeth were falling out… We were at a party one night and then I got up and thought, 'I can't be bothered (to take drugs) today.'

"Then one day turned into a week and that turned into a month, then that into a year.

"As that state of mind took hold I would go out with the people I was surrounded with at the time, I'd be sitting there thinking: 'I don't even like you, your bird's an idiot!

"'What you doing in my front room? Get out of here!'"

He now has a whole new smile - and band.

David Beckham

Leyton lad David Beckham still managed to capture hearts with his natural teeth when he was just a talented young Manchester United player.

But his magnetism was only boosted when he started flashing an altogether whiter and straighter grin.

You don't need to a celeb to transform your teeth.

This mum avoided going to the dentist for FIFTEEN YEARS - but splashed out on a £28,000 set of veneers to give herself a healthy smile.

And this 34 stone man was livid after his dentist banned him from being treated 'in case his bulk broke the chair'.
