The Who rocker Roger Daltrey urges fans to wear earplugs at gigs to stop them going deaf – just like him
The veteran musician 74, has to wear hearing aids on both ears after fronting 'the world’s loudest band' for over 50 years
THE Who rocker Roger Daltrey has urged fans to wear earplugs to gigs so they don’t go deaf like him.
Daltrey, 74, has two hearing aids and has to lip read after fronting “the world’s loudest band” since 1964.
The Who’s lead guitarist Pete Townshend, 73, is also hard of hearing.
Speaking to The Sun, Daltrey said: “I warn everybody now as people don’t need to put themselves through it.
“The music sounds just as good if you just put a bit of cotton wool in your ears.
“I can’t sit in front of most rock bands. When I come to the Royal Albert Hall every year for the shows I put on, I’ve always got earplugs in — I can’t take the volume and I’m deaf.”
The My Generation singer and Eric Clapton, 73, were honoured this week with a Royal Albert Hall Star.
But Daltrey has urged people not to ignore hearing issues. He said: “There should be no embarrassment in wearing hearing aids.
“There’s still reluctance by men to get their hearing tested. When they get their hearing back, they’re amazed by how much they’d lost.
“If you take care of your hearing you will do your brain a favour.

“Your brain goes into overload lip-reading.”
